THE CAYUGA DUCK
One of the most beautiful birds, especially on a sunny day in spring when the black beetle green feathers have an iridescence that has to be seen to be believed. As they get older white feathers often appear.

ORIGIN : Lake Cayuga, New York State USA - picture of Lake Cayuga here
BREEDING : large wild black ducks appeared on the lake in the 1850's and present day birds are believed to be their descendants - Black East Indians are supposed to have been used to improve the colour.
EGGS: They should be Black fading to sky blue through the season; however very very few strains of Cayuga lay black eggs any more.
SIZE : heavy;    drakes- 8 lbs (3.6 kg) 
                       ducks - 7 lbs (3.2kg)
MEAT: They were a meat breed and should not be too light.
TEMPERAMENT : quiet, hardy breed
